Athill was a real force of nature, contributing as an editor to some very famous writers of the 20th century, as well as establishing herself and her writing as 'great' along the way. memoirs, novels, essays, she did it all and this one (besides the cool cover), is such a lovely look at the 1950s in England, particularly London, where the swinging 60's had not yet begun.  The story focuses on Meg, a respectable young lady until... until maybe she's not?
